Ever since Salman Khan exploded on the silver screen with his high flying kicks and hard-hitting one-liners, action genre got a new lease of life. Every action hero who had abandoned this theme suddenly felt obliged to go back to their claim to fame. One such actor is Akshay Kumar. He was known as the best action hero of Bollywood before he took a terrible fancy to comic capers. When the latter fizzled out for him, he chose to revert to his trump card – action! So now we have Akshay Kumar gearing up to give black and blue eyes to every goon that crosses his path in this Friday’s release Rowdy Rathore. Let’s find out if it has the potential to pack a punch.

Rowdy (Akshay Kumar) is a petty thief who gets the thrill out of duping people. He is ill-behaved and cares a damn for anyone. But one day his life gets jolted when a young girl claims Rowdy is her father. Stunned by the claims, Rowdy decides to figure out the truth. During investigation, he finds out that the girl is IPS officer Vikram Rathore’s daughter who is his twin brother. But before they could bond, Vikram gets killed by underworld gangsters with Rowdy as a witness. Shocked and deeply sad, Rowdy decides to step into Vikram’s shoes and avenge his death. Rest of the story follows Rowdy’s ways of bringing Vikram’s murderers to book.

Budgeted at Rs. 40 Crores (approximately), Rowdy Rathore is the Hindi remake of Telugu film Vikramarkudu. Directed by Prabhudeva, the film is produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and UTV Motion Pictures and has Sonakshi Sinha in the lead opposite Akshay. Undoubtedly, Rowdy Rathore has some of the big names attached to it. Though the story isn’t out-of-the-box and to some extent illogical, it will all depend on the way it has been presented. As far as promotions are concerned, Rowdy Rathore enjoyed both good and bad publicity. The first look trailer of the movie got a lot of good response. They also came up with a unique idea of launching the music of the movie in a chawl. If we talk about bad publicity, the crew of the film was almost kicked out of a historic location in Hampi for not having accurate permissions. All in all, publicity for the movie was apt.

Coming to the actors, Akshay’s moustache and garish look in the film as Rowdy works for the character, his action skills were never doubted by anyone and so, it will be a treat for all fans of the genre. On top of that, Akshay promises it will be raw action, another reason to check the movie out. His ‘Don’t Angry Me’ is already on everyone’s lips which make for good recall value. This is Sonakshi Sinha’s second movie and we hope she has more to do in the film than just look pretty. Overall, Rowdy Rathore has the potential to set the cash registers ringing provided it delivers what it promised – raw action. But you won’t know until you see the film that releases on June 1.
